UAV and Aero-Model Engine Types Explained: How Do They Make Power?

Technical Guide
A UAV's flight performance — including speed, endurance, payload and stability — depends on its engine. By "engine" we mean any system that converts energy into thrust. The main categories used in UAVs and aero models: - Two-stroke piston engines: the highest power-to-weight ratio, simple and light, which is why they dominate long-endurance UAVs. Fuel and oil are premixed, so lubrication comes from the fuel mixture. - Four-stroke piston engines: lower fuel consumption and longer service intervals, but heavier for the same output. - Electric motors: excellent control response and low noise, but endurance is limited by battery energy density. - Turbine and jet engines: very high thrust for large platforms, with much higher cost and complexity. For most industrial UAV applications, the air-cooled two-stroke piston engine remains the best balance of power density, reliability and cost — which is exactly the category the FQ series is built for.
